Mashpi Lodge

Mashpi Lodge in Ecuador rests on a ridge at 3,117 feet above sea level, within a 3,000-acre private reserve. Nearly all of the reserve’s land is forested, and roughly 70% is virgin primary forest.

This super-biodiverse habitat, known as Choco, is a transition between lower montane rainforest and Andean cloud forest.

Wildlife thrive here, including 400 species of birds – including some 36 endemics. Monkeys, peccaries, and make their homes inside the reserve.

Waterfalls and streams crisscross verdant hills. Expert guides (one university-trained and one from the local community) lead group-basis explorations of the surrounding trails and viewing platforms.

The full board program at Mashpi Lodge includes transfers, guided touring; meals; non-alcoholic drinks; Wi-Fi; and use of rain boots, walking sticks, and ponchos. The Dragonfly cable car ride carries and additional charge.

The Mashpi lodge itself is a contemporary cocoon, constructed on the site of a former lodging camp. Floor-to-ceiling glass (cleaned by hand each day) brings the sights of the forest into your room; its common to see hummingbirds, frogs, and butterflies from your bed.

Yaku Suites

The lodge’s three Yaku Suites are located on the first floor and are each 495 square feet. They include a king-size bed, large bathroom with twin washbasins and bathubs with a view into the forest.

Wayra Rooms 

The 20 Wayra rooms are 366 square feet. There are 13 Wayra Twin Rooms with two full-size beds and  7 Wayra King Rooms with king-size beds.

For families or groups of friends, three pairs of Wayra Rooms inter-connect, two pairs on the second floor and one pair on the ground floor, each one with a king-size bed connected to a room with two full-size beds.

Explorations

Mashpi Lodge has an extensive list of activities available to guests. Visitors can hike through rainforest trails where they can rope swing through the jungle, visit waterfalls, see monkeys and observe hummingbird gardens.

One of the highlights of a trip to Mashpi is the Dragonfly – an open-air cable car system that carries guests over, across and sometimes even directly through the forest canopy.

Casa Higueras

Hidden behind a simple façade, the 17,222-square foot Casa Higueras boutique hotel overlooks the colorful hillsides of Valparaiso and the Pacific Ocean.

Situated in the historic neighborhood of Cerro Alegre in Valparaiso, the hotel is a reconstructed aristocrat mansion that was built by English and German immigrants in the 1920s. The neighborhood was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for its spread of historic mansions and impressive gardens.

Accommodations 

The 20 guest rooms (5 Traditional, 4 Premium, 6 Premium Superior, 2 Superior, and 3 Deluxe) are tucked away on five floors and range from 236 to 602 square feet.

The comfortable interiors feature soft textiles, coved ceilings, and polished wood.

Jicaro Island Lodge

Jicaro Island Lodge

Jicaro (“hee-ka-row”) Island is a private islet in Lake Nicaragua, about 15 minutes by boat from the colonial city of Granada.

The islet was formed by an eruption of Mombacho Volcano, which rises above the lake’s southern shore.

Arriving by covered skiff, guests are welcomed with fresh fruit juices, cool towels, an orientation of the island. The lush grounds are preserve native trees, flowers, and orchids.

Jicaro Lodge sits on the edge of Lake Nicaragua within thick green forests.

Food is a highlight at Jicaro; fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruit compliment simple, flavorful preparations.

The full-board program includes three meals daily, non-alcoholic beverages, guided excursions, and boat transfers to and from the Granada’s Asese Port.

Accommodations 

A garden path loops through the garden to nine casitas designed by architect Michael Falkner. Each of the two-story casitas has a lake view. This is a place to disconnect, relax, and renew.

In-room amenities: ceiling fans, cotton sheets, bathrobes, Wi-Fi, drinking water, umbrellas, deck, hammock, yoga mat, mosquito netting, and security box.

Alcohol and laundry service carry an additional fee. Massages can be arranged upon request. Jicaro does not have air conditioning. The casitas do not have televisions. The minimum age for guests is twelve years.

Activities

Jicaro Lodge is the perfect starting point for a nature tour. Guests can take plantation tours, tropical forest tours and visit hot springs.

Visitors can experience a birdwatching tour, zip-line, go riding or boating/fishing on Lake Nicaragua.

Another highlight is visiting the Masaya Volcano National Park, one of the few places in the world where you can visit active volcanoes up close.

Matachica Resort & Spa

Matachica is a boutique beachfront resort on the eastern shore of Ambergris Caye and is one of our favorite places to stay in Belize. Its restaurant, Mambo, is one of the island’s best.

Matachica Resort & Spa is the only resort in Belize that provides an adults-only experience, consequently the minimum age is 17.

Accommodations 

The project has 31 vibrantly colored, thatched-roof rooms and suites. Some upper category rooms include sitting rooms and ocean views.

The train’s menus are created by the team at Belmond Monasterio who infuses flavors of natural produce from the Peruvian Andes into every meal.

Spirit of the Water: Cusco – Puno, 1 day, 1 night

Day 1 – Tuesday:

Depart from Cusco at 11 am. Enjoy lunch in a dining car with sophisticated cuisine. In the afternoon, disembark and explore Raqch’i, an Incan historical site.

In the evening, travelers can enjoy a tour of La Raya. Later, guests enjoy cocktails and dinner while they unwind in the lounge car with fellow travelers.

At 11:30 pm, guests arrive at Puno – Lake Titicaca Station.

Day 2 – Wednesday:

Guests wake up to spectacular views of Lake Titicaca as they eat an onboard breakfast. After, guests will disembark and continue on with their travels.

Peruvian Highlands: Cusco – Puno – Arequipa: 3 days, 2 nights

Day 1 – Thursday:

At 11 am, travelers will board the train in Cusco and relax into their private cabins. Enjoy a delicious lunch before leaving to explore the Raqch’i archeological site in the afternoon.

In the evening, guests will get a tour of La Raya and later eat dinner in the train’s dining car and chat with travelers at the bar.

Day 2 – Friday:

Awake to striking views of Lake Titicaca as you eat breakfast. Disembark and take a boat ride to the Uros Islands and continue on to Taquile Island.

Enjoy a private lunch on Collata Beach where you will watch demonstrations from traditional dancers and artisanal workers.

Have afternoon tea at the station before eating dinner onboard and heading toward Arequipa.

Day 3 – Saturday:

Eat an early morning breakfast before departing to an excursion of Sumbay caves, historic cave paintings.

Return to the train for lunch and disembark in Arequipa.

*Some guests may choose to depart the train early at Cañahuas and explore Colca Canyon. Guests can also disembark on Km 93 and extend their journey to Belmond Las Casitas.
