Santarena Hotel

Santarena Hotel is perched on a hill between two Pacific Coast beaches. The hotel is part of the Las Catalinas master-planned community in the sunny Nicoya Peninsula.

Las Catalinas is a car-free community, inspiring residents to connect with nature. Most residents walk, bike, or navigate the community’s interior roads by golf cart.

The hotel’s design pays homage to mansions in Spanish Colonial cities such as Havana and Cartagena. Its whitewashed walls, archways, and terraces are fitting for this sun-soaked coast.

Each of the bright, airy rooms at Santarena are equipped with Wi-Fi, cable television, and air conditioning.

Moderate & Connecting Rooms 
These rooms measure 344 square feet, and are king-bedded. Each has a spacious bathroom and high ceilings. Some have balconies, while others have small gardens.

Deluxe Rooms  
Deluxe Rooms at Santarena measure 344 square feet and are located on the second and third floors. These rooms have views of the ocean or Las Catalina’s main plaza. They are king-bedded, with high ceilings, spacious bathrooms, and wood floors.

Premium Rooms  
Premium Rooms at Santarena measure 344 square feet, and are located on the top floor. Some offer ocean views from a balcony. These rooms are king-bedded, with high ceilings and spacious bathrooms.

Suites
The king-bedded Corner Suites at Santarena Hotel measure 602 square feet, and feature double balcony terraces, wood and tile flooring, and oversized bathrooms with double vanities.

Chaa Creek

Chaa Creek located on the Macal River, in the Maya Mountains of western Belize. This is one of our favorite places to stay in Belize.

Created by Lucy and Mick Fleming in 1981, Chaa Creek is one of Central America’s pioneering eco-resorts. Around the lodge grounds and gardens, 400 acres of protected jungle are yours to explore.

Accommodations 

Chaa Creek has a wide selection of rooms, suites, and villas—something for everyone. Although the collection of residences has evolved over the lodge’s history, each habitation is equipped with comfortable furnishings, cotton linens and bedding, a security box, coffee makers, hammock, bathrobes, slippers, and hairdryer.

Most guest rooms at Chaa Creek–such as the original cottages–do not have air conditioning or television, but most of the upper-category residences–suites and villas–do have those conveniences.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, but is strongest in the common areas, such the restaurant and pool zones.


Ix Chel Villas

Chaa Creek offers two Ix Chel Villas. Each has a king-bedded master bedroom with a sitting room lounge, and a junior suite with a king bed. The sitting room lounge in each can accommodates two extra guests, for a total occupancy of up to 6.

The Ix Chel Villas feature floor-to-ceiling glass walls that offer 180° views of the surrounding jungle. The veranda is equipped with an outdoor shower, private plunge pool, and jetted tub.

Ix Chel Villa guests have access to personal butler services. The butlers can coordinate room service, housekeeping, laundry, and concierge services.

The Ix Chel Villas are air conditioned and have ceiling fans.


Spa Villa

The three-bedroom Spa Villa includes a king-bedded master bedroom, and two bedrooms with twin and queen beds, accommodating up to six guests.

The Spa Villa is equipped with a kitchen, private veranda, jetted tub, and air conditioning.


Tree Top Villas 

The Tree Top Villas at Chaa Creek accommodate up to five guests (one king bed, two day beds, and possible rollaway bedding).  They are ideal for families or groups of friends.

The villas feature private plunge pools, outdoor showers, and private sundecks.

Tree Top Villas are not air conditioned.


Orchard Villa

The Orchard Villa at Chaa Creek was designed with families in mind, but it’s also popular with groups of friends. The villa’s main floor has two queen beds and a bathroom with shower. The upstairs loft has two single beds and a second bathroom.

The Orchard Villa does not have air conditioning.


Garden Jacuzzi Suite

The Garden Jacuzzi Suite at Chaa Creek is furnished with a king-size four-poster bed, and accommodates two guests.

The suite also features a spacious bath with jetted tub, and a private veranda with forest views.

The Garden Jacuzzi Suite does not have air conditioning.


Macal River View Suite 

The Macal River View Suite at Chaa Creek is family-friendly, accommodating up to three guests in a king-size bed and oversized day bed. The suite has two private terraces with lounge chairs and hammocks, and an outdoor jetted tub.


Cottage Collection 

Each of the 23 cottages at Chaa Creek are unique in terms of view and layout. Most can accommodate two guests, although some work well for small families of four of five guests (two double beds and possible rollaway bedding).

Most of these spacious cottage feature private sundecks, balconies, or verandas. Each guest room has a private bathroom with indoor shower.  Some units have outdoor showers.

The cottages do not have television or air conditioning.


Camp Casitas 

The ten casitas are set on raised platforms and have private verandas. They are designed for guests wanting the ultimate proximity to nature. Breakfast and dinner is included.


Amenities

Guests can enjoy the hotel’s restaurant, bar, swimming pool, butterfly garden, canoes, natural history center, and medicinal plant garden. Massages and horseback rides can be arranged for an additional fee.

Activities

The Retreat Costa Rica

The Retreat Costa Rica is an adults-only spa and relaxation hotel conceived by wellness expert and chef Diana Stobo.

Located in the town of Atenas—known for its year-round spring-like climate—The Retreat is only 45 minutes by car from San Jose’s international airport. Because this hotel is catered to adults, the minimum age requirement is 16.

The Retreat’s Boca Dulce Restaurant emphasizes fresh, nutritionally-dense ingredients. The menu is farm-to-fork, without gluten, dairy, or refined sugars.

Accommodations 

The 13 airy guest rooms are simply and elegantly designed to calm the mind and relax the senses. Each residence is unique, and named for a special plant or food grown on the property.

Rooms at The Retreat Costa Rica have no telephones or televisions, so as not to disturb the peaceful, natural surroundings. Large windows draw guests outdoors to appreciate the views and birdsong.

The crisp bed linens are organic, as are the all-natural bath amenities.

Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.


Deluxe Rooms

The 7 Deluxe Rooms are ideal for couples.  These rooms offer views of the mountains. They feature private terraces or decks, king or queen-size beds (and Hollywood twin options), and sitting areas. Other in-room amenities include organic cotton bathrobes, slippers, organic hypo-allergenic bedding, hairdryer, magnifying mirror, and security box.

Some of these rooms have air conditioning.


Premium Rooms

The 7 Premium Rooms featuring views of the Pacific Ocean or the mountain. These rooms are furnished with either 2 queen-size + 1 twin bed, or 1 king-size bed. Each Premium Room at The Retreat Costa Rica has a balcony.

Other in-room amenities include organic cotton bathrobes, slippers, organic hypo-allergenic bedding, hairdryer, magnifying mirror, and security box.

Chan Chich Lodge

Chan Chich Lodge is located within the 30,000-acre Gallon Jug private reserve. The lodge is surrounded by Belize jungle-covered hills—the site of a 3,000-year-old Maya settlement. Led by resident guides, guests can explore the ancient plazas, partially-excavated temples, and a ritual ball court.

The reserve is contiguous to additional conservation areas—a combined half million acres of protected habitat for more than 500 species of birds. The jungle is also home to howler monkeys, colorful frogs, deer, pumas, and jaguars. Over nine miles of trails surround the lodge. Guided forest walks, canoe excursions, and horseback rides can be arranged.

The lodge has a farm-to-table restaurant, featuring fresh ingredients from farms in Gallon Jug and Spanish Lookout; roughly 60% of the plant-based ingredients (including shade-grown coffee) are sourced on site.

Accommodations

The 15 rustic guest rooms feature thatched roofs, tile floors, and fully-screened windows. Some higher category rooms have hardwood floors, air conditioning, and private porches. Wi-Fi is available in the main lodge building common areas.

In-room amenities include ceiling fans, bathrobes, security box, hair dyers, coffee makers, and a minibar. The lodge also provides daily housekeeping and turn-down service.


Luxury Cottage

The two-bedroom Luxury Cottage has one king-size bed per bedroom. This residence can accommodate four adults, or four adults and two children.

Other features include a screened-in veranda with hot tub and lounge chairs, an outdoor dining space, mosquito netting, natural eucalyptus fiber & cotton blended linens, ceiling fans, security box, bathrobes, umbrellas, coffee maker, and mini-bar.


Deluxe Cottages

The Deluxe Cottages are built atop the Maya temple plaza, a short walk from the main lodge. Each residence is furnished with either 2 queen-sized beds or 1 king-size bed. Deluxe Cottages have a wrap-around veranda with hammock, chairs, and futon.

Other features include mosquito netting, natural eucalyptus fiber & cotton blended linens, ceiling fans, security box, bathrobes, umbrellas, coffee maker, and mini-bar.

These cottages can accommodate up to four adults.


Garden Cottages

Built atop the main plaza of the Maya temple, the Garden Cottages are a short walk from the main lodge. These residences feature 2 queen-size beds, a wrap-around veranda with hammock and futon, a desk, and a bathroom with shower. These residences can accommodate up to four adults.

Other features include mosquito netting, natural eucalyptus fiber & cotton blended linens, ceiling fans, security box, bathrobes, umbrellas, coffee maker, and mini-bar.

 

Pool Casitas 

The two-level Pool Casitas are configured with 2 double beds (main level) and 1 queen-size bed (mezzanine level). Other features include mosquito netting, natural eucalyptus fiber & cotton blended linens, ceiling fans, security box, bathrobes, umbrellas, coffee maker, and mini-bar.

These residences can accommodate up to four adults.

Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge

Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge rests on the thickly-forested banks of the Rio Negro—a mirror-like tributary of the Amazon—near Anavilhanas National Park.

The Anavilhanas are the greatest river archipelago on the planet with more than 400 unexplored islands.

The Bungalows be configured for double, single, or triple-occupancy.

Panoramic

Panoramic Rooms at Anavilhanas Jungle Lodge measure approximately 790 square feet and overlook the Amazon rainforest.

These residences are equipped with air conditioning, ceiling fan, minibar, security box, hairdryer, soaking tub, hot shower, television, and a balcony with hammock and living room.

These residences can be configured for double, triple, or quadruple occupancy.

The Panoramic suite at Anavilhanas features two twin beds, outdoor hammock and wood furnishings.

The Anavilhanas National Park is a Brazilian protected area in the state of Amazonas. The region is one of the most unique and well preserved ecosystems in the world, with astounding biodiversity.

Guests at the lodge enjoy morning and afternoon wildlife viewing excursions (on foot or by boat) in the company of other guests. Marquee wildlife include river dolphins, caimans, monkeys, sloths, macaws, and toucans.
