Luna Salada Hotel & Spa

Luna Salada is located on a low hill, at the edge of the Salar de Uyuni—the world’s largest salt flat—at 11,995 feet above sea level.

The hotel is constructed largely of rectangular salt blocks harvested from the salar. The block construction is surprisingly soundproof and well insulated.

To assuage the effects of high altitude, oxygen service is available at the reception desk. Loaner bicycles are available.

Accommodations

Each of the 49 rustic guest rooms is equipped with air conditioning, en suite bathroom, telephone, safety box, electrical outlet, electric blanket, down comforters, and central heating.

Most rooms have wood plank flooring, and either one queen or two twin beds. Wi-Fi is available in the hotel’s common areas.

Amenities

The hotel’s spa offers massages and is equipped with a whirlpool and steam room. Among the hotel’s other amenities are a restaurant, bar, library, game room, lounge with television, fireplace, and boutique.

Salar de Uyuni

High in the Altiplano of southwestern Bolivia, the Salar de Uyuni covers more than 4,000 square miles. This is the world’s largest salt flat—a barren pavement of white infinity.
The salar is the evaporated remnant of two enormous prehistoric lakes (Minchín and Tauca), once covering thousands of square miles.

The average altitude at Salar de Uyuni is approximately 11,980 feet above sea level. During the November to March wet season, the salt pan is flooded by overflow from the north.

A thin layer of water covers the salty plain, reflecting the sky with astonishing clarity. Passengers in off-road vehicles crossing the flooded flats often enjoy the sensation of floating.

November is also breeding season for the three species of flamingo that inhabit Salar de Uyuni. Two notable islands rise from the center of the salar, Isla Pescador and Isla Incahuasi—red volcanic oases covered in towering cacti.

Other attractions include a small museum in Coquesa Village, the Tunupa Volcano Trail, and a petrified forest.

Uyuni Airstreams

These custom 25-foot caravans were brought to Uyuni in 2012. They offer unmatched freedom and comfort for visiting the salar’s islands, archeological sites, and villages.

Accommodations

Each classic aluminum Airstream is furnished with private bathroom (shower, sink, WC), one queen-sized or two twin beds, mini-bar, dining table, heating, electric blankets, and power outlets.

You won’t find Wi-Fi or televisions here; instead, turn your eyes to the brilliant sunrises, sunsets, and southern night sky.

Amenities

Meals and beverages can be served inside the Uyuni Airstreams, in a dining tent, or under the night sky.

Lounge chairs, blankets, hot beverages, and a fire pit add to the comfort of sundowners. Bicycles are provided, in case you’d like to explore the salar on your own power.

Supplemental oxygen is available to assuage the effects of high altitude.

Throughout your stay, you’ll be accompanied by a driver / guide and driver / cook, with four-wheel-drive vehicles and a mobile kitchen trailer. They retire early in the evenings to give guests total privacy.

The Uyuni Airstream experience is available for up to 6 guests. The programs begin at 2 nights, with most guests staying 3 nights.

The Uyuni Airstream stays are available year-round, but they have limited access to the salt flats during the wettest months (late December to February). Still, they are in high demand for these “mirror effect” months (November to March/April).

Blue Apple Beach House

Blue Apple Beach House is a boutique hotel and beach club located on the southwestern shore of Tierra Bomba Island, approximately 30 minutes from the Santa Cruz Marina in Cartagena by speedboat.

Blue Apple’s owner and founder, a UK expat with years of experience working on yachts in the French Riviera, opened her first restaurant on Isla Baru in October 2015.  It was an immediate hit, and diners kept asking to spend the night rather than make the return journey by boat to Cartagena. Blue Apple opened in July 2016 in response to that demand. The hotel now has 10 guest rooms, as well as one of the best beach club in Colombia.

The beach club is open to day trippers, and private groups as large as 200.  It’s a popular venue on weekends and holidays.

Accommodations

Blue Apple Beach House is a converted private home, constructed with local architectural techniques and materials–thatch, stone, and rattan. Each room is unique in terms of colors, layout, and furnishings. You’ll find custom-crafted textiles; handwoven hammocks; and pieces created by local carpenters, artists, and artisans.

Each of the ten rooms has a private, ensuite bathroom, hot water, air conditioning, balcony or terrace, mini-bar, cable television, and Wi-Fi.

Nota bene: Blue Apple’s beach club guests love to dance and enjoy the music. Do not ask or expect Blue Apple to turn down the music or dampen the party.

Children under age 12 are not permitted to stay at Blue Apple Beach House on weekends.

Cuisine

The beachfront restaurant offers a seasonal menu featuring mediterranian classics and Colombian-Caribbean specialties–think mussles, coconut rice, seabass, shrimp, fresh vegetables, and chocolate churros. Food is made to order from locally and sustainably-sourced ingredients. Guests have access to vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Hotel guests can even enjoy kosher-style meals.

The wine list is eclectic, with favorites from the new and old worlds. Cocktails are prepared with fresh herbs and juices.

Amenities

Among the shared amenities at Blue Apple Beach House are two open-air swimming pools, a large restaurant, beach club, and dive center.

Hotel guests receive VIP status at the beach club, with complimentary access to specially reserved sun-beds.

Massage treatments are available for an additional fee.

Shuttle boat service is offered for hotel guests, with service 4x daily.

Mobile phone signal does not currently reach Blue Apple.

Activities

Guests can paddle board, kayak, snorkel, SCUBA dive, swim, and enjoy the beach club. Horseback tours of the island can be arranged, with helmets and chaps provided.

Bilingual dive instructors are available on site, offering guided snorkeling, diving, and PADI certification courses. The area’s top sites for diving and snorkeling–Rosario Islands and Baru Island–can be accessed in under an hour by speed boat.

If you can spend more time in the Cartagena area, LANDED can also arrange special experiences during an extended stay in the Old City:

  • Visits to the sprawling, ever-changing Bazurto Market
  • Rum tastings led by a master mixologist
  • Sunset cruises in the Bay of Cartagena
  • Private day trips by yacht to the Rosario Islands (snorkeling and beaches)
  • Visits with sculptors and painters
  • Walking or driving explorations of the old city with architects and historians
  • Cooking classes and chef’s table experiences
  • Coffee tastings guided by master baristas
  • Visits to handmade candy and ice cream shops
  • Helicopter overflights of the Caribbean Coast and The Lost City
  • Day trips by helicopter to coastal Tayrona National Park or sleepy, historic Mompox
  • Salsa lessons and accompanied visits to salsa clubs
  • Drumming workshops (seasonally available)
  • Boxing sessions (no prior experience necessary)

Parque Futangue Hotel & Spa

Parque Futangue is a private nature reserve in northern Chilean Patagonia. The reserve rests at the edge of one of the largest lakes in Chile–Lago Ranco–near the western slopes of the Andes.

The reserve borders Puyehue National Park, known for its volcanic landscapes and precious Valdivian (temperate) rainforest. This is an evergreen forest, with slow-growth species such as Lenga, Nirre, and Canelo Andino. Much of the forest is bearded with moss–a sign of its health. Resident species include kingfishers, foxes, Andean cats, and pumas.

Here, guests can explore a network of hiking trails covering more than 60 miles, and leading through the ancient woodlands to hidden lakes, waterfalls, lagoons, and peaks.

Parque Futangue’s restaurant–Meson del Caulle–highlights the heirloom ingredients of northern Patagonia. Chef Christian Cosme Garrido is a pioneer in rescuing and reviving many of the foraged and nearly-forgotten herbs, mushrooms, vegetables, and berries of this region.
