MAGELLAN EXPLORER
The 73-passenger Magellan Explorer is a new and modern expedition vessel custom built for Antarctic air-cruises.
The Magellan Explorer carries a staff and crew of 60. The vessel is 90.7 meters long, with a width (beam) of 16.2 meters, and a draft to baseline of 4.3 meters. With 3,440 kW of engine power, Magellan Explorer is one of the swiftest ships in the Antarctic; its cruising speed is 14 knots.
Activities aboard the Magellan Explorer include sea kayaking, hiking, and snowshoeing among others.
The ship features a glass-enclosed observation lounge and presentation room along with a dining room, bar, library, meeting room, gym, sauna, and medical clinic. The forward-facing observation deck leads to the bow of the ship–an excellent location for viewing icebergs and marine wildlife. The ship has a fleet of 10 Zodiac boats, allowing for rapid disembarkation at landing sites.
Magellan Explorer Cabin Options
Magellan Explorer has capacity for up to 100 guests, although air-cruise itineraries have a maximum occupancy of 73 guests. The seven categories are:

- Porthole Cabins
- Triple Suites
All cabins except Porthole cabins feature private balconies. All double cabins except two have two twin-size beds that can be configured as one king-size bed. Most cabins have two twin-size beds that can be configured as one queen-size bed. Each cabin has individually controlled heating system, sitting area, wardrobe, and a private bathroom with shower and heated floors.
Sample Itineraries
Five, seven, nine, fourteen, and sixteen-night cruise programs are available.
Sample 7-night Cruise:
- Day 1: Arrival in Punta Arenas, Chile before 2:00 PM; transfer to your hotel; mandatory briefing with important trip information.
- Day 2: Two-hour flight to King George Island in Antarctica; walk 1.25 miles to reach the shore and board a Zodiac that will take you to the Magellan Explorer.
- Day 3-6: Cruise between South Shetland Islands and the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. Disembark by Zodiac and explore the continent each day. On board, enjoy education programs and presentations. No journey is the same.
- Day 7: Return to King George Island; fly back to Punta Arenas; transfer to your hotel; evening at leisure.
- Day 8: Transfer to the Punta Arenas airport for your onward flight.
