Guatemala’s weather is eternally comfortable: neither too hot nor too cold. As most of Central America, its seasons tend to be divided into the dry season and the wet season, although the temperature, which averages 72°F across the country, varies more according to altitude than by season.

 

November through April are Guatemala’s dry season and sunniest months, ergo the best time to visit. During the Christmas season and Holy Week, traditional festivals overflow with color and pageantry. The rainy season extends from May to September. Regional temperatures vary with altitude and coastal proximity.

The official language of Guatemala is Spanish. However, 21 Mayan languages, one indigenous language, and one Arawakan language are also spoken throughout the country.

Guatemala is home to volcanoes, rainforests, and ancient Mayan sites. The country is also a biological hotspot, sustaining nineteen distinct eco-regions. Visitors can access volcano summits, observe jaguars, tapirs, quetzals, and sea turtles, and explore ancient cultures and bustling markets. Other options include chocolate workshops, kayaking, and stand-up paddle boarding, among others.

The hurricane season usually lasts from early June to late November.

The areas you’ll be visiting in Guatemala are generally quite safe; however, common sense precautions are still important. As a general rule, you should not be out in the streets alone after dark. Stay in well-lit areas. Keep money out of sight and in a money belt. Keep your travel documents in the hotel safe or concealed in your money pouch.

La Aurora International Airport, located just four miles south of central Guatemala City, offers regional connections to Belize, Costa Rica, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, and Peru. From the USA, direct flights arrive from Chicago (4.5 hours), Los Angeles (4.5 hours), Houston (3 hours) and Miami (2.5 hours).

Helicopter charters within Guatemala start at US$4,000 per transfer, depending on distance, number of passengers, and requested date.
