Estancia Vik Retreat
Estancia Vik is a private retreat set among the coastal pampas of Uruguay, five miles inland from the boho-chic beach town of Jose Ignacio. More than a ranch, the estancia is an experience—an entrée into the distinctive art, architecture, and cuisine of Uruguay.
Designed by innovators Alex and Carrie Vik in association with Marcelo Daglio, the Spanish Colonial-style house measures 50,000 square feet — with 12 singular suites.
Each public space is memorable and worthy of appreciation. The 3,200-square foot central living room is a temple of art, anchored with a flowing marble column sculpted by Pablo Atchugarry. The ceiling is a hand-painted “satellite-scape” of the Uruguayan Coast.
Estancia Vik Location
Estancia Vik is located on Eugenio Saiz Martinez rural road, approximately five miles (10 minutes by car / 30 minutes bike ride) from the charming beach town of Jose Ignacio.
The 86-mile drive from Montevideo’s airport takes approximately 110 minutes. Punta del Este’s airport is roughly 50 minutes (46 miles) by road.
The estancia’s surrounding 5,000-acre estate is yours to explore: rolling pastures, streams, a lagoon, and woodlands. Guests of the ranch can enjoy unlimited riding, as well as biking, canoeing, hiking, lawn tennis, polo, birdwatching, and paintball—ever a hit with extended families.
Guests also have access to the swimming pools and restaurants at Estancia Vik’s nearby sister properties: Bahia Vik and Playa Vik. Wi-Fi is available throughout the main house.
Estancia Vik Accommodations
Each of the twelve guest suites (ranging from 590 to 914 square feet) features installations by leading Uruguayan artists—Jose Trujillo, Eduardo Cardozo, and Marcelo Legrand, among many others—paired with original furnishings and fixtures. Some suites include free-standing wood bathtubs fashioned by canoe makers.
Each suite has air conditioning, security box (large enough for a laptop), mini-bar, hairdryer, bathrobes, and slippers. Wi-Fi is available throughout each retreat. No televisions in rooms, but there is a game room with TVs and Xbox.

Estancia Vik Amenities
Outside, the Absolute Nero granite swimming pool is lit by dozens of fiber-optic lights arranged to mimic the Southern Sky.
Among the other amenities are a game room, a brick-barreled dining room, an avant-garde barbecue restaurant, a 5,000-bottle wine cave, a fitness center, a polo field, and an organic garden. In front of the house, the whitewashed stables house more than a dozen prized polo ponies.
Estancia Vik Activities
Estancia Vik has an endless menu of activities available to guests. Everything from paddling down Laguna de Jose Ignacio in one of their handmade canoes, to attending a cooking class and learning to make authentic barbeque beef, like the Gauchos.
Guests can also enjoy flamingo watching, world-class bird hunting in nearby Rocha and fishing in the Laguna Jose Ignacio.
If guests want to stay closer to the hotel, they can enjoy playing tennis on grass courts, soak in a canoe tub after a long day of exploring and relax with a pitcher of clerico, a white wine sangria with tropical fruits.
