Casa Real Hotel is a national treasure. Located on the manicured Santa Rita Winery estate 45 minutes southeast of Santiago, the hotel is located in a grand manor house. This carefully preserved, 19th-century, Pompeian-style summer house was declared a historic monument in 1972.
Casa Real Hotel sits at the foot of the Andes Mountains in Alto Jahuel in the Maipo Valley. This is prime Chilean Wine Country. The Santa Rita winery manages nearly 2,471 acres of vineyards–some at the estate, and some in neighboring valleys. The hotel itself rests within the central estate’s 99-acre park–an Eden of ancient trees, flowers, herb gardens, and boxwood labyrinths. Black-necked swans preen near the ponds, and green parrots chatter in the cypresses.
Founded in 1880, Santa Rita is one of Chile’s oldest and most traditional wineries. Two years later, French landscape architect Guillermo Renner designed the garden park that surrounds the hotel. He incorporated Italian, French, and English-style sculptures.
Ricardo Claro bought Santa Rita Winery in 1980, and the manor house 10 years later. He restored the structure its original beauty, and decided to share it with guests as Casa Real Hotel. Next door, the Neo-Gothic chapel is still in demand for picture-perfect weddings and celebrations.
Amenities & Services
Casa Real features several lounges, a dining room, a chapel, a game room, a terrace, and an inner courtyard that are kept the same way they were at the end of the XIX century, with its original furniture. The hotel also features a pool and a newly remodeled gym with panoramic views of the gardens.
The cuisine at Casa Real Hotel has been specially designed to pair with the winery’s wide range of wines.
Accommodations
All 16 guest rooms at Casa Real Hotel are decorated in a classic style. Rooms overlook the hotel’s patio or park and feature a TV and Wi-Fi.
All guest rooms can be furnished with either a king-size bed or two twin-size beds. All bathrooms were newly remodeled. The hotel does not have air-conditioning. Fans can be provided during the warmer summer months of December to February.
Casa Real Rooms range in size from 323 to 538 square feet.
Casa Real Suites are approximately 753 square feet.
Casa Real Hotel Activities
Guests at Casa Real can visit the vineyard’s Andean Museum, La Panadería Cafe, wine shop, Doña Paula Restaurant, and choose a range of different activities and winery tours, sample wine pairings in the Doña Paula Restaurant, or opt for a gourmet picnic on the grounds.
Among Santa Rita’s wine tasting tours, guests can also choose the winemaker experience tour, the pedal bar tour, or a bike and wine tour through the premises.
DOÑA PAULA RESTAURANT
Doña Paula Restaurant, named in honor of Doña Paula Jaraquemada, owner of the main house at Santa Rita more than 200 years ago, offers Chilean and international dishes paired with the winery’s finest wines.
Now a historic monument, the restaurant retains its original whitewashed walls, hung with paintings from the Quito and Potosí schools of art. The high ceilings are constructed with exposed bamboo beams. The restaurant overlooks the vineyards and features an interior garden.
THE ANDEAN MUSEUM
The Andean Museum (16,146 square feet, and available for private gatherings) houses a collection of approximately 3,000 archeological and ethnographic treasures from Pre-Columbian cultures of the New World. A second collection features seasonal exhibitions of contemporary art.
WINE TOURS
Guests at Santa Rita Winery can choose between the Classic Tour, the Selection Tour, the Premium Tour, The Ultra Premium Tour, and the Carmenere Tour. (Carmenere, long thought to have been extinct, was rediscovered here. It’s now the among the most sought after varieties of Chilean wine.)
Tours can include a guided tour of the vineyards and varietal garden, the complete process of making, aging, and bottling the wine, or guided tours of the cellars, park, and gardens.
The Ultra Premium Tour is on a private basis and can be tailored to fit your interests.
WINEMAKER EXPERIENCE TOUR
With the Winemaker Experience Tour, Santa Rita allows guests to become winemakers for a day and create their own wine using the same implements you would find in an enology laboratory.
Guests will be able to see the process of winemaking from the taste, the design & making of the blend, bottle, cork, label and seal a bottle of wine.
Each person will make and take home their own 750cc-bottle plus a gift apron.
