Playa Vik Retreat
Playa Vik is South America’s most ambitious avant-garde beachfront retreat. The project is a collaboration by innovators Carrie and Alex Vik and Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott.
Playa Vik faces Playa Mansa, in the boho-chic beach town of Jose Ignacio on Uruguay’s eastern shore.
Playa Vik’s heart is the Sculpture Building—an inclined, two-story structure clad in salt-resistant titanium panels. The monumental bronze door was cast by Pablo Atchugarry. 
The sea-facing wall is entirely glass, blurring the lines between indoors and outdoors and drawing guests to the pool terrace.
45-50 minutes from Punta del Este (PDP )airport, and just 15 minutes by car from Estancia Vik.

Playa Vik Location
The peninsula of Jose Ignacio, a tiny fishing village with an estimated population of 200, is fast becoming one of Latin America’s hottest beach destinations. Like Punta del Este, one side of this peninsula has gentle waves, while the other is perfect for surfing.
Walking from one side of town to the other takes about five minutes, including time to pat a cart horse and admire the hand-painted street signs. On the eastern side of the peninsula, the town’s faro (lighthouse) has been guiding ships since 1877.
After sleeping in, guests in Jose Ignacio can enjoy horseback riding, sailing, and fishing with the locals. Surfing and kite surfing lessons are also available.
From July to October, franca whales migrate along the coast here. Toes-in-the-sand restaurants serve grilled fish, rustic pizzas, and juicy casados. Sunsets and stargazing round out most days.
Playa Vik Accommodations
The perimeter of the project is flanked by six separate casitas, each with two or three bedrooms, fireplace, private garden, and artwork and installations by leading contemporary artists—Zaha Hadid, Anselm Kiefer, and others.
Inside, you’ll find a bar, kitchen, and library with an installation by James Turrell. The top level has three suites.
Each suite has air conditioning, security box (large enough for a laptop), mini-bar, hairdryer, bathrobes, and slippers. Wi-Fi is available throughout each retreat. There are no televisions in rooms, but there is a game room with TVs and Xbox.

Playa Vik Amenities
The 75-foot-long black granite swimming pool juts out over open air. Fiber optic lights in the pool floor mimic the constellations of the Southern Sky.
The space under Playa Vik holds a 40-foot-long wine cellar, a game room, a fitness center, and a small spa with two treatment rooms and a sauna. At sunset, guests often settle in around the fire pit for drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
