Kosher Travel in Galapagos

The Galapagos operates by its own rules. Wildlife approaches without fear. The natural world changes before your eyes, as volcanoes erupt and shorelines shift.

The food infrastructure—on a remote archipelago 600 miles off the coast of Ecuador with a small residential population—is largely unaware Jewish dietary laws. Kosher travel in the Galapagos requires planning, flexibility, and the right partner. With preparation, it also allows for an entirely enriching Galapagos experience without compromises.

Mainland Ecuador First: Quito or Guayaquil

Most Galapagos itineraries pass through Quito, Ecuador’s capital, or Guayaquil before the flight to the islands. Quito has a small Jewish community and limited certified kosher options. Guayaquil has a Chabad. The practical approach for kosher travelers is to source locally in Ecuador where possible, and to ship kosher provisions—packaged, shelf-stable, and certified—from Colombia, Peru, or the USA.

On a Liveaboard Cruise

The key variable on a Galapagos liveaboard is the vessel’s kitchen and the advance communication with the operator. LANDED briefs operators on kosher requirements before departure, as outlined by our clients during the trip-planning phase.

Most luxury Galapagos vessels have kitchens that can work with sealed, pre-packaged kosher ingredients provided by the traveler, preparing simple pareve or dairy meals—pasta, rice, vegetables, salads, eggs—in accordance with basic kosher requirements.

For travelers keeping full kashrut, the approach involves: cold-packing and air-freighting certified packaged kosher foods to the Galapagos in advance; communicating clearly with the vessel’s chef in advance; and understanding that some creative flexibility will be required. Galapagos food importation has its own set of regulations and inspections.

On a Private Charter

A privately chartered Galapagos vessel gives kosher travelers the greatest flexibility. With full control of the provisioning process, LANDED can pre-load the vessel with certified kosher foods, supply dedicated cookware if desired, and work with a private chef who understands your requirements. Menus can be pre-designed and sent to you for approval. LANDED coordinates the provisioning, the chef briefing, and the logistics of maintaining kashrut onboard.

PRICING NOTE

FOR KOSHER TRAVELERS, BUDGET AN ADDITIONAL $600-$1000 PER PERSON FOR IMPORTING CERTIFIED KOSHER FOOD SUPPLIES. PRIVATE CHARTER KOSHER PROVISIONING CAN BE ARRANGED AT ADDITIONAL COST; LANDED COORDINATES WITH THE CHARTER OPERATOR AND CHEF IN ADVANCE.

Shabbat in the Galapagos

Shabbat at sea, in the Galapagos, under equatorial stars, with the sound of sea lions on the nearby shore—it is an unusual and quite beautiful Shabbat. On a charter vessel booked far in advance, LANDED can help arrange a day without navigation.

If you’re staying on land for Shabbat, LANDED can arrange touring options that fit your requirements and add texture to the trip. We’ve arranged walks to nearby tortoise reserves, stargazing with astronomers, and visits from a marine biologist who taught the children how to speak sealion.

The pace of an expedition cruise naturally accommodates a quieter day, and the vessel’s deck, the stars, and the silence provide a Shabbat your family will always remember.

LANDED was wonderful in taking care of every detail to make our trip a fabulous experience that we will never forget!! We want to come back in 5 years when our other grandchildren are old enough to appreciate all that the Galapagos offers! – Carol Z, LANDED Traveler

After many years of return visits, these far-flung islands still captivate me. Now, my fascination is ornamented with memories: a hike with friends in the Fernandina lava fields; hammerheads on a dive with Erynn at Gordon Rocks; our daughters surfing at Tortuga Bay; a snorkeling session with sea lions amid curtains of diffused light in an Isabella grotto. On and on. Gifts and treasures. – John Montgomery, Co-Founder of LANDED

“The place is like a new creation. The birds and beasts do not get out of our way; the pelicans and sea-lions look in our faces as if we had no right to intrude on their solitude; the small birds are so tame that they hop upon our feet; and all this amidst volcanoes which are burning around us on either hand.” – Edward J Larson
