Colombia emerged as an international destination in the 2010s; what was once overlooked is now understood as one of the most varied, beautiful, and culturally alive countries in the hemisphere.
The capital pulses with creativity—top-tier restaurants, innovative galleries, design hotels, and vibrant nightlife. The highlands have the coffee region—a landscape of impossible green rolling through the Andes, dotted with family-owned farms and colonial towns. The coast has Cartagena—one of the great romantic cities of the Americas. The far north has the Tayrona coast—rainforest meeting Caribbean in palm-fringed perfection.

The Range and What It Buys
A LANDED-designed luxury vacation in Colombia typically ranges from $8,000 to $20,000 per person, not including airfare—a range that reflects both the variety of Colombia’s destinations and the meaningful difference in cost between them. Colombia is also one of the LANDED destinations where well-designed travel at the lower end of the range does not require significant compromise on experience quality.
A Colombia trip anchored in the coffee region and Medellín represents some of the best value in the LANDED portfolio. The boutique hotels on family-owned coffee estates provide outstanding accommodation in a genuinely beautiful landscape—rolling coffee hills, bamboo and cacao groves, the wax palms of the Valle de Cocora, and the charming antioqueño architecture of the small towns—at prices meaningfully below equivalent lodges in more established destinations. Medellín’s best boutique hotels in El Poblado are similarly priced to offer quality at approachable prices.

Cartagena calls for greater investment. The best boutique hotels—in or near the walled city–price accordingly for their extraordinary locations and high demand from international high-end travelers. In January and February, high season rates at these properties add meaningfully to the per-person cost. LANDED helps clients navigate the Cartagena hotel landscape to find the right combination of quality, location, and price.
“Colombians appreciate passion. It’s a country alive with warmth and expressiveness—a whole nation that seems to understand the value of flirtation, dance, poetry, and courtesy. If you’re in the city, it’s a given that you’ll dress up well and hit the town for dinner and dancing. Colombians have an instinct for romance.” – John Montgomery, Co-Founder of LANDED
Cartagena: Colombia’s Treasure Chest
Cartagena’s cost is primarily accommodation and restaurant-driven. The walled city and the Getsemani neighborhood have a large number of boutique hotels, but not all of them live up to their websites. Demand in high season pushes rates and requires advance planning. Booking the right property six to nine months before a December or January arrival is essential for Cartagena.
Restaurant dining in Cartagena ranges from excellent and affordable. A LANDED-designed Cartagena itinerary builds in both. This combination delivers the full range of the city’s food culture while preserving resources for other experiences.

LANDED Podcast:
Activities in Cartagena are relatively low-cost: the city invites walking and most of our favorite experiences are nearby. Day trips to the Rosario Islands add cost—the yacht charter, provisioning, island access, and the national park entry fee—but are a worthy addition to any Cartagena itinerary of more than two nights.
The Coffee Region: Rich and Rewarding
The Eje Cafetero is one of our favorite regions of Colombia, and one of the best values. A working finca converted to a boutique lodge—breakfast at a long table with the coffee hills visible in every direction, a tour of beneficio and coffee tasting with the owner, an afternoon on horseback through the verdant Andean landscape—costs significantly less than comparable experiences in Costa Rica or Peru. LANDED’s guides in the coffee region are master storytellers.
Transportation within the coffee region is typically by private vehicle; towns are connected by good roads, and the distances between Salento, Armenia, and Manizales are manageable. Domestic flights from Bogota or Medellín to Pereira or Armenia are an excellent value that add the aerial view of the Andean cordillera. LANDED designs around your time constraints.

Medellín: Value and Vitality
Medellín is among the most affordable of LANDED’s city destinations in South America. The best boutique hotels deliver excellent quality at prices well below Cartagena’s boutique tier. The restaurant scene offers fine dining experiences at prices that invite exploration—Colombian cuisine restaurants with serious wine lists, and innovative restaurants with multi-course tasting menus. These are accessible at a fraction of what a comparable meal costs in a US or European city.
Getting to Medellín from Cartagena is a forty-five-minute domestic flight—one of the most straightforward segments in Colombia.

PRICING NOTE
A LANDED COLOMBIA TRIP TYPICALLY RANGES FROM $8,000 TO $20,000 PER PERSON, EXCLUDING AIRFARE. DOMESTIC FLIGHTS ARE AN EXCELLENT VALUE. A COFFEE REGION AND MEDELLÍN ITINERARY SITS TOWARD THE LOWER END OF THE RANGE—A STRONG VALUE-TO-EXPERIENCE RATIO. ADDING CARTAGENA IN HIGH SEASON AND THE TAYRONA COAST EXTENDS THE JOURNEY AND THE COST. LANDED DESIGNS TO YOUR BUDGET AND THE DESTINATIONS YOU MOST WANT TO REACH.

Colombia has arrived as a destination, but it has not yet priced itself to match what it is worth—particularly in the coffee region, where the quality of experience and the cost of delivering it are still genuinely misaligned in the traveler’s favor. That imbalance will not stay open indefinitely. It’s value is a strong argument for traveling now.
