For travelers who love adventure: Futaleufu

Futaleufu is a small Chilean town in the Los Lagos Region, most easily reached by flying to Esquel, Argentina (roughly 50 miles or 2 hours by road). The route here was unpaved until recently, and traffic lights are rare. This is what Patagonia felt like in places like Torres del Paine and El Chaltén decades ago.

Why should you make the journey? Futa’s main attraction is its eponymous river, widely considered one of the best whitewater rivers anywhere. But the valley itself is worth the trip: old-growth Patagonian forest, snow-capped peaks, clear tributary streams, fly-fishing, mountain biking, trekking, and gorgeous riverside lodges. Futa is deep Patagonian magic.

The River

The Futaleufu (“Big River” in the Mapuche language) drops through a gorge-and-valley system that generates world-class whitewater: consistent gradient, large volume, complex hydraulics. The signature rapids have names: Throne Room, Terminator, Casa de Piedra.

LANDED recommends Futaleufu for travelers who love adventure. The river is appropriate for experienced kayakers and for rafters who are fit, willing to be coached, and comfortable with genuine risk. It is also appropriate for strong intermediate paddlers who come with the intention of being challenged. Expert guidance is essential.

The bright turquoise waters of the Futaleufú River squeeze through rugged, textured gray boulders. Dense green forests line the riverbanks, leading up to towering mountain peaks partially obscured by low-hanging storm clouds.

Beyond the Whitewater

Futaleufu is not only a river. The valley surrounding the town offers horseback riding through araucaria and lenga beech forest on trails that see almost no tourist traffic.

Trekking routes climb to viewpoints above the river gorge to places where you can see the full scale of the canyon and understand, from above, what the water is doing.

The image captures a group of trekkers silhouetted against the bright sun as they make their way through a golden, sun-drenched field in a mountain valley. The scene evokes a sense of adventure and peace.

Mountain biking covers gravel roads through working farm country or dirt single-tracks in forest and mountains.

Fly fishing on the quieter tributaries.

Multi-sport programs combine several of these across five to seven days, with the river as the centerpiece and the valley as context.

“Yes, Futa was born and shaped by the river. That’s what started tourism in the area, and it still brings rafters and kayakers from all over the world. But people are starting to discover that there’s so much more to the river than rafting—and so much more to Futa than the river itself. Beyond the popular ‘Bridge to Bridge’ section of the Futaleufú, we’ve had families with young kids or grandparents choose routes with a little less adrenaline. It can be a gentle float, a fun inflatable kayaking trip on a Class II section, or fly-fishing lessons for the whole family followed by a picnic along the river. More and more trekking routes are becoming accessible, some with views that rival Patagonia’s most iconic hikes. All of this while maintaining the small-town feel and sense of remoteness that define Patagonia.” – Sofia Peña, Director of Operations & Travel Designer

Logistics and Season

The season runs from October through April. December through February offers the most consistent conditions and the warmest water. November brings higher water levels from snowmelt and more complex hydraulics; expert paddlers often prefer it.

Getting to Futaleufu requires flying to an airport such as Puerto Montt or Coyhaique (Chile) or Esquel (Argentina), followed by a scenic drive or a small charter flight. Remoteness is one of the reasons why this magnificent valley retains so much of what makes it special.
