Carmelo rests on the northern bank of the Rio de la Plata. This is a small town, surrounded by low hills and grassy plains. Pine forests line the riverbank, with estuaries attracting an abundance of birdlife. Some of the best resorts in Uruguay are found here, featuring charming riverside cabins and championship golf.
What to do in Carmelo
Carmelo is a place for leisure. Days here are unhurried—best spent horseback riding through grassy plains, sailing on the wide Rio de la Plata, or learning the art of polo. The region is also home to boutique vineyards and artisanal cheese houses, where private tastings and guided tours can be arranged. Whether you’re exploring the countryside or relaxing at a riverside resort, Carmelo offers a peaceful contrast to the city.
