The Pampas

Uruguay's Pampas

Away from the coast, Uruguay’s hilly interior is divided north to south by the Rio Negro. To the north, the land opens into classic gaucho country—rolling pampas grasslands beneath wide skies, where horseback riding is more than a pastime; it’s a way of life. Some of the country’s finest estancias—family-owned ranches dating to the mid-1800s—welcome guests with genuine warmth and deep tradition. Days are filled with horseback riding, sipping mate, and sharing traditional barbeques. Birdwatching and fishing trips can also be arranged.

In the northwest, near Salto and Termas de Arapey, the mineral-rich waters of the Guarani Aquifer feed a collection of peaceful spa hotels. These hot springs have drawn wellness seekers for generations. Between soaks, guests can hike through groves of pine and eucalyptus, enjoy horseback excursions, and choose from a menu of spa treatments.
