Nuestra Señora de La Asuncion de Panama
Founded in 1519, Nuestra Señora de la Asunción de Panamá (Panama City) was the first European settlement on the Pacific Coast of the Americas. The outpost quickly became the capital of Castilla de Oro, a base for Pizarro’s campaign against the Inca Empire and a collection point for treasure bound for Spain. That wealth attracted trouble, culminating in Henry Morgan’s notorious raid of 1671.
Two years later, the city was reestablished five miles southwest on a defensible peninsula now known as the Casco Antiguo. This quarter, with its narrow streets, colonial facades, and restored plazas, is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Once the wealthiest city in the New World, Panama’s fortunes shifted over centuries, but its geography has kept it central to global trade—from the California Gold Rush to the Panama Canal and into the present day.
Modern Panama City is the region’s most cosmopolitan hub. High-rises line the waterfront, luxury shopping and fine dining abound, and the city serves as a jumping-off point for rainforests, islands, and Pacific beaches. Its mix of history, culture, and modern convenience makes it a natural base for exploring Panama.
