The weather in Patagonia is unpredictable; this is a mountainous region with varied terrain and strong atmospheric influences.
It is not uncommon to experience sunshine, wind, rain, and even snow on a single day, even if traveling during the summer months (December to February in the Southern Hemisphere).
Austral Summer: December to February
South America’s summer extends from December to February. This is the primary season for visiting Patagonia. These months offer the most hours of daylight, higher temperatures, and the greatest selection of hotels and lodges.
During these months—known as Austral Summer—temperatures generally range between the mid-40s and mid-60s.
Argentine Patagonia has a more arid climate, while Chile maintains an average humidity of 75% year-round.

Peak Season: Mid-December to Mid-January
Within the South American summer, visitation is highest from the second week of December to the middle (or end) of January.
These are the days with the longest time between sunrise and sunset. At December’s summer solstice in Tierra del Fuego, sunrise is just before 5AM, with sunset after 10PM.
These are the months when travelers from the Northern Hemisphere have holiday vacation time, and many South American countries hold their summer vacations from school. Daylight reaches peak duration, allow more time to explore and adventure.
During these months, space in hotels and lodges are in highest demand. Prices increase accordingly. Many of our favorite places to stay book up six months or more in advance. It pays to book early.

Shoulder Season: October / November, March / April
The shoulder months–October, November, March, and April–have fewer visitors and can be a fine time to travel in Patagonia.
The golden hours near dawn and dust seem to extend in these months—a feast for photographers.
National Parks offer more solitude. Special experiences (such as sheep herding with gauchos) can be arranged. Wildlife (and ewes) bear their young. Prices moderate, and space in top lodges is easier to find.
Winter and Off-Season Months: May to September
In the deep south (e.g. Tierra del Fuego, El Calafate, and Torres del Paine) many of our favorite hotels and lodges close for the season.
Daylight hours are shorter. At the winter solstice in June (the shortest day of the year) daylight extends from around 9AM to 6PM.
These are the months with the lowest visitation rates. Those who do travel to Patagonia enjoy winter sports (skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling) and pristine landscapes. In many places, these months also bring far less wind.
