The best time to visit is between December and May. Rainy season extends from June to November, with hurricane potential from July to mid-November.

Temperatures are fairly constant year-round, with highs in the mid-80s and lows in the 70s. March can be windy on the coast.

English is the primary language in Belize. Its territory was a British Crown colony, known as British Honduras, from 1783 to 1964. It gained full independence in 1981.

Maya and Spanish are also commonly spoken. Plautdietsch is spoken in the Mennonite communities.

Belize’s size—just 180 miles from north to south and 68 miles east to west—allows travelers to effortlessly mix active adventure with relaxation. Visits to tropical forest and mountain lodges can be conveniently paired with downtime at luxurious islands and beach hotels.

In the mountainous interior, you can zipline, scout ancient Maya cities, track jaguars, swim in river pools, and explore caves.

Belize is famous for its reefs, cayes, and atolls. Many visitors come to Belize purely for the snorkeling and diving. This is one of the best locations in the Western Hemisphere for swimming with whale sharks.

As with many countries, borderlands and remote areas can carry a higher risk. This is occasionally true in some of the Guatemalan and Mexican border regions, where armed groups have entered Belize in search of rare plants and animals for the black market.
