Patagonia

Smile. You’ve LANDED in Patagonia.

Patagonia is the edge of the world—a land of never-ending plains and towering mountain ranges that stretch across Chile and Argentina. The diverse landscapes offer plenty of opportunities for outdoor enthusiasts, from hiking in iconic national parks to experiencing the awe of walking around glaciers.

Beyond the natural beauty, it also represents both the new hope of immigrants and the ancient domain of the Mapuche and Tehuelche.

Destinations

Patagonia extends across the southern territory of Chile and Argentina: from Neuquén and Araucanía in the north to Tierra del Fuego in the south, and from the Chilean fjords to Argentina’s South Atlantic cliffs. In the west, granite spears and ice-clad volcanoes loom above pale-blue lakes and primordial forests. East of the Andes, the Patagonian steppe stretches to the horizon.

Who we design Patagonia journeys for

For Couples and Private Travelers

Couples and private travelers enjoy Patagonia’s sense of solitude, space, and quiet luxury. Here, you can experience transformative connection and powerful natural encounters.

The diversity of Patagonia’s lodging options mirrors the variety of its breathtaking scenery. Imagine:

  • Spending the day hiking in Torres del Paine, then soaking in your private cabin’s wood-fired hot tub before tucking in to a fireside dinner.
  • Riding with gauchos (and their herding dogs) on a private estancia, then retiring to your suite at a cozy ranch house.
  • Trekking in El Chalten and returning to an intimate dome camp with views of the Fitzroy Massif.
  • Skinning up an active volcano, skiing down, and helicoptering to a private home in a lakeside forest reserve.
  • Kayaking or whitewater rafting in the Argentine Lakes District, with dinner under the stars at your private pop-up camp.
  • Fly fishing in the rivers and lakes of the Valdivian Rainforest, unwinding at a hot spring oasis, and settling in at a riverside lodge.
  • Whale watching and visiting penguin or elephant seal colonies on the Atlantic Coast, then enjoying a traditional asado barbeque at a private estate.

For Families

Patagonia is surprisingly well-suited to families and multi-generational groups.

Your LANDED Patagonia expert will consider:

  • Activity levels and pacing for different ages
  • Engaging experiences for children and teens
  • Comfortable bases that allow everyone to unwind and connect

Most lodges are well equipped for families. We’ve also adapted adventures for young travelers. For example, we modified kayaks and trekking routes for a family with children under age 10.

We’ve hiked, ridden horses and bikes, kayaked, and camped with our children in Patagonia. LANDED’s expert travel designers are recommended by countless families like yours, and Conde Nast Traveler has recognized LANDED as top travel advisors for both Patagonia and Family Travel.

At LANDED, we know the territory first-hand and by heart. For more than 20 years, we’ve planned custom journeys all across Patagonia. We’re recommended by countless travelers, and Conde Nast Traveler has recognized LANDED as top travel advisors for Patagonia.

FAQ

Peak season (including the Austral Summer) runs from October to April. That’s when the most options are available. Many lodges are closed from May to September. A few are open year-round.

  • Shoulder Season (October-November, March-April) – fewer travelers, mercurial weather and great opportunities for wildlife viewing.
  • Austral Summer (December to February) – long days, potential for high wind, and sunshine. This is the most popular time to visit Patagonia.
  • Off-Season (May to September) – shorter days, less wind and winter sports opportunities.
Spanish is the official and predominant language in both Chilean and Argentinian Patagonia. English is spoken in larger cities and tourist locations, but it’s rarely spoken in rural areas away from hotels. Additionally, there are small pockets of indigenous communities within Patagonia who speak the indigenous Mapuche language known as Mapugundun.

Great question. Packing for Patagonia is not difficult.

Dress in layers, allowing you to add or remove clothing for comfort as conditions change throughout the day. It’s common to be bundled up in the early morning, strip down to a light shirt during a mid-day hike, and cover up again in the afternoon and evening. You’ll want to bring a daypack to carry any unworn layers.

LANDED has prepared a special packing list for travelers visiting Patagonia.

Yes, Patagonia is great for kids.

We are now experts in traveling to Patagonia with our own children, but once we were just like you, taking our families to Patagonia for the first time.

Teens, tweens and  parents: hiking, biking, kayaking, puma tracking, and multi-sport outings. Hikes and horseback rides can be adapted for younger children. Groups can be split by activity level (1 parent/guide each).

Everyone can enjoy cultural interactions, cooking classes, picnics, sailing, wildlife viewing, fishing, and river trips.

If you have the opportunity to travel to Patagonia with your children, take it. We’ve adapted active itineraries for families with children as young as 5. Some parents have even opted for kid-carrier backpacks, allowing the whole family to enjoy a challenging hike.

One other consideration is travel time. Some of the best places in Patagonia have retained their special character in part because they are not so conveniently reached. Where possible, we can limit travel times, but it’s not unheard of to drive 5 hours to reach a destination.

Argentina and Chile—the two nations whose territories include Patagonia—are generally quite safe. However, common sense precautions are still important.

When you travel away from the urban areas (e.g. Buenos Aires and Santiago) and into Patagonia itself, you will find that crime rates are virtually non-existent. Still, be mindful of your belongings when visiting the region’s larger cities, such as Punta Arenas, Puerto Natales, or El Calafate.

The two main international gateways to Patagonia are Buenos Aires, Argentina and Santiago, Chile. Both cities receive non-stop flights from major air hubs in North America, Europe, and South America.

When Patagonia is the objective, most of our travelers stay two or three nights in one of these cities upon international arrival. From the international (EZE) or domestic airport (AEP) in Buenos Aires, and from the international airport in Santiago (SCL), we head south into Patagonia.

Patagonia rewards careful planning. LANDED attends to every detail, transforming mere visits into immersive experiences. Here, luxury is not measured in extravagance, but in connection, awe, and freedom—unforgettable moments of clarity and discovery.

At LANDED we:

  • Select the ideal lodges, estancias, or private villas based on location, comfort, and experience;
  • Arrange guides chosen for their expertise, adaptiveness, and personality; and
  • Ensure seamless logistics, such as land transportation and charter flights.
